Côr Meibion Clwb Rygbi Llangennith has its roots back in 2011 when Dusty Hare (of Northampton Rugby Club fame) challenged a group of us men to a singing match in the King’s Head pub, opposite the Hall, on the village green in Llangennith.
That challenge match, which ended in an honourable draw, was so enjoyed by the men that they resolved to continue to sing together. And so the Côr Meibion Clwb Rygbi Llangennith was conceived to nurture this enjoyment of singing with the avowed aim of never actually playing any rugby!
Since that first challenge, we have sung in a wide range of events and have raised significant sums for a range of charities (Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer Society and the RNLI at Burry Port).
Our repertoire has been extensive and we have had various themes for our concerts. We usually perform two concerts a year in the Village Hall – a summer one and a Christmas one. For each we attempt to link the songs with a common theme. So far our themes have been: Christmas Carols, Las Vegas and the Rat Pack, Christmas in the Trenches, Dylan Thomas, Songs in Union…rugby world cup 2016, and Prosecco and Strawberries.
We are proud that the range of songs we sing is quite ambitious for a small choir and have been so well received.
We love the singing and the sociability the Choir gives us and we now meet weekly for rehearsals and we then usually return to where it all started, for a pint (or two!) in the King’s Head.
We’ve got plenty of room for more voices to join our choir and we welcome men – basses, baritones and tenors – in our local Gower villages to come and be part of our choir with a difference. If you’re interested, please get in touch.
